Interview carried out by Tom Stockman August 23rd 2019
Tom Stockman: Congratulations on PEANUT BUTTER FALCON.
Tyler Nilson: Thanks.
TS: I watched it on my pc the other day.
Mike Schwartz: How does it play on the small display?
TS: Funny you must say that, There are such a lot of lovely exteriors in your film I stored considering “dammit, I must be watching this on the large display”
TN: Sure, we are movie geeks too. With all of the photographs our cinematographer used and all the lenses, it’s so great for us to have the ability to see it on the theater.
TS: I noticed over on the Rotten Tomatoes website that it registers 100% on their Tomato Meter. That must make you guys really feel pretty good
MS: It feels actually good right now.
TN: We’ve received something to lose! We will only go downhill from there.
MS: Sure, I take a look at that every couple of days questioning when it’s going to go down. It took us 5 years to make this film, from the thought to where it’s now, so for individuals to observe it at all now, a lot less to like it, feels actually special.
TS: It’s your first function, right?
TN: Yes, we’ve got never made a function. We had made a few shorts and commercials.
TS: And take a look at all the individuals you might have in your film! You’ve received Oscar nominees starring in your first film!
MS: Sure three of them! Bruce Dern, John Hawkes, and Thomas Haden Church.
TS: How did you get such an amazing forged on your first film?
TN: A miracle.
MS: I feel our producers actually referred to as in some favors, however not all the time does it go like that. I feel individuals responded nicely to our script. The rationale it took us five years is that we wrote the script for Zack and we couldn’t get anybody else to learn it for nearly a yr. Then we grabbed a digital camera with our buddy Dave and we shot a trailer starring Zack and with Tyler enjoying the position that Shia LeBoeuf performs. After that, individuals started reaching out to us. Even Shia facetimed us and stated he needed to be within the movie. He hadn’t even completed studying the script and he needed to make it.
TS: Let’s speak about this fellow Zack Gottsagen. You say you wrote the half for him. Where did you meet him?
TN: We met him at a camp for individuals with and without disabilities. They get collectively they usually play sports activities and typically they make brief films. We have been making a film as a part of this camp and Zack acted in our film and he was making very sensible appearing selections He been appearing all his life and he stated that he needed to be a film star. That’s what he needed in life. We figured that wouldn’t be straightforward for him because there are usually not a whole lot of characters written that have Downs Syndrome or individuals making films starring individuals with Downs Syndrome, but he actually needed to do that. We tailored the script for him.
TS: Did the truth that he had Down Syndrome have an effect on his capacity to memorize his strains?
MS: Having Down Syndrome is a special capability, I don’t even know if I’d say it’s a disability. A method it affected manufacturing was that Zack was very present on set in addition to being emotionally out there and intelligent. He wasn’t simply saying the road. He was having a conversation. A number of the strains he simply got here up with on his own on the spot. I feel being so current gave him a leg up and made him a greater actor in many ways. It was virtually like a superpower as an alternative of a disability. A few of the other actors have been intimidated when doing a scene with Zack as a result of he was not faking it, he was dwelling it. It’s such a excessive bar to succeed in and in case you don’t match him there, it appears such as you’re faking it. It’s an intimidating thing.
TS: I felt just like the chemistry between Zack and Shia LeBoeuf was very robust. It’s really the guts of the film. Have been they buddies off-screen as nicely?
TN: Sure. We had an previous truck on the set. The truck that John Bernthal drives within the movie. Tyler and I went to select up Shia. Zack was within the back sitting in an previous tire Then Shia received within the back and we drove right down to an previous shrimp dock on the coast and the two of them just hit it off like previous pals. They chatted for hours and watched wrestling collectively It was a real friendship. They weren’t faking it.
TS: Has Zack been an enormous a part of serving to to advertise this movie?
MS: Yes. He’s taping a Immediately Show phase as we speak and lately did a Individuals Journal interview.
TS: I do know you confirmed this movie at SXSW. Has Zack to some of these film festivals?
TN: Yes we simply saw him two days ago at a movie pageant in Bloomington. He’s going to be out doing The Tonight Present and Good Morning America quickly.
TS: How does he feel about all of this?
MS: He loves it. He all the time will get a standing ovation once we are at a screening He’s very proud.
TS: How did Dakota Johnson become involved in your film? This should’ve been right across the time the Fifty Shades of Gray films have been coming out.
TN: Yes, it was proper after the final one had come out. She read the script and needed to be in our movie. We spoke to her on the telephone and related together with her. We provided her the position. There were no auditions for that part.
TS: What would she like on the set?
MS: Only a goddess. She actually beloved Zack as properly She was used to doing much greater films so she came on our set, the place we had less cash and the actors didn’t have fancy trailers, but she actually related emotionally. It was like a family Or, in a method, it felt like summer time camp We actually have to provide numerous credit to our producers. If we did not have Oscar-nominated producers, numerous these actors would not have taken a danger with it.
TS: What was it like working with Shia LeBoeuf at that exact level in his profession? There was some controversy with things he had carried out soon before that.
TN: Sure, but he was great.
MS: Yes, he’s had some controversy, however he’s an artist Working with him was a dream despite what he might have finished in his private life. There’s a story that he tells about being with Zack and being at a birthday celebration and Zack having a conversation with him about what he does off the set. Zack advised him that it was his huge probability to be in a film and to please just be there with him. Shia stated in a interview with Esquire Magazine that Zack changed his life for the higher. He’s on document as saying that this movie saved his life.
TS: We find out about midway via the film that the title PEANUT BUTTER FALCON refers to a wrestling character. Who came up with that title?
TN: We have been just hanging out with Zack in the future and divine intervention, or whatever that factor that comes right down to writers is, simply kind of came down on all of us.
TS: It’s a catchy title. It doesn’t make sense if you first take a look at it. Type of like VANILLA SKY, however it catches your consideration.
TN: Yes. However there’s THE MALTESE FALCON and The Millennial Falcon, the phrases simply really feel good collectively.
TS: It takes place on the Outer Banks of North Carolina but you guys filmed it in Savannah, Georgia. Why did you select Savannah?
MS: Primarily due to tax advantages and entry to the crew, however actually the story labored nicely there. We had the inland waterways and we had the marshes and the whole rural south. It takes so many people to make a movie, they usually have some great individuals there in Savannah The Outer Banks is nice, however there’s merely not a lot of people there that make films.
TS: What have been a number of the challenges filming in Savannah?
MS: In all probability the same as if we had filmed in North Carolina. It was scorching. There were 14-foot tidal shifts that made units disappear. The scene we referred to as the “stroll on water“ scene we shot in 15 minutes The ocean went up 14 ft only a half hour later, so we have been in a boat filming on sand that’s utterly underwater later
TS: That is your first function and also you two are co-directing. Describe the co-directing course of
TN: We’ve been working collectively for 10 years I feel we both just had a talent set that worked nicely together and there’s not a whole lot of ego. Half the time he’ll provide you with a greater concept than I’ve and typically I’ll provide you with a better concept. Whenever you’re on a film set, things are shifting so quick it really works nicely that considered one of us might go join with Shia some time the other may be speaking to a crewmember. It’s virtually prefer it goes twice as quick.
TS: How lengthy have you ever guys recognized one another?
MS: Over 13 years.
TS: The place did you to grow up?
TN: I grew up in Outer Banks North Carolina
MS: And I grew up in Sonoma, in northern California
TS: Inform me concerning the wrestler guys that seem at the end of your movie. How about this huge man named Sampson?
TN: Those guys are real professional wrestlers. Guys like Nick Foley and Jake Foley who played Sampson, also called “Jake the Snake“ Those guys are like wrestling royalty. We have been hoping that those guys would comply with play elements, and we have been so fortunate that they agreed to
TS: You stated you guys are Movie Geeks. What are your favorite prime two or three films?
TN: Properly I can’t simply say two or three. You need to give me 12!
MS: My listing to modifications on a regular basis however I actually love films the place goals come true. FIELD OF DREAMS to me is likely one of the greatest.
TN: I’ll offer you three real fast: DANCES WITH WOLVES, BOTTLE ROCKET, and IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER.
TS: Good luck together with your film and I sit up for seeing it once more, subsequent time on the large display!
MS and TS: Thanks!
